Kids and Club Fitting (Is It Necessary, Worth It?)

At True Spec, we have a lot of young golfers come in for a golf club fitting. Many parents are unsure whether club fitting makes sense for junior players, and for some golfers, it isn’t as important as it is for others. Let’s take a look at a few things that can help you decide if your child needs a golf club fitting.

Skill Level

Club fitting for kids becomes more and more important the better the kid gets at golf. Children who are competing and are dropping their handicaps consistently should be playing with equipment that is matched to their needs.

Brand new junior golfers who are still trying to decide if they like the game can get away with a junior boxed set or beginner option for a little time. However, as soon as it is apparent that the child is progressing quickly and reaching milestones, a fitting should at least be considered.

Learning and Development

Golf club fittings are an option for learning and development. Young golfers can learn things about spin rates, total distance, launch angle, and more. True Spec master fitting professionals can teach junior golfers things that they should know about their golf game.

Use this as a teaching moment and learning experience.

Reaching Goals

If our child has goals in place and is determined to reach them, a key component is equipment. Playing with the right equipment will help you reach goals and improve your scoring. A child with some determination and a strong work ethic should have equipment that matches their needs as a player.

Establishing a Plan for Player Development

With kids growing so much (and so fast), clubs need to be replaced more often. Your True Spec master fitting professional can help you determine a path for player development, which clubs will need to be upgraded, which can be adjusted, and what the plan is to eventually get a full set for a fully grown older junior golfer.

Age

One of the least important aspects of golf club fitting for juniors is age. There are 10 year old golfers who are better than 18 year old golfers. It’s more important to look at the skill level and where your child is headed in the game of golf.

Some kids know from a very early age that golf is their sport, and others take a bit of time to decide. As a parent, you will know when equipment is really starting to make a difference in the child’s game.

Final Thoughts

The bottom line here is that a club fitting for a junior golfer is always going to be a positive thing. However, with the pricing of kids’ golf clubs and club fittings, it’s important to come to your first True Spec fitting at the right time. Make sure that your child has an interest in the game, an understanding of what equipment can do for them, and some consistency in their ability to make great shots on the golf course.
